About College

The Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology (GCELT), was established in 1919. It is the pioneer in the field of education and research on Leather Technology was originally started under the name 'Calcutta Research Tannery' on the recommendation of Munitions Board set up by the Government of India immediately after the first World War with the aim of exploring Indigenous resources of hides, skins and tanning materials for the purpose of production of leather and leather goods and development of leather industry in the India.

  • GCELT was affiliated to the University of Calcutta for imparting training in B. Sc. (Tech) course in Leather Technology.
  • The new schemes and latest development undertaken by the college has turned it into a big organization in the field of Leather Technology, the like of which was not found in any part of India.
  • The main service provided by the college to the industry during 90 years of existence was supply of technical manpower and technical development.
  • The college is now affiliated from the University West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) located in Salt Lake itself.

Research & Development:-

GCELT is a registered institute under section 35(1)/ (ii) of Income Tax Act 1961 since 1.4.2006. Thereby an amount equal to 160% of any sum paid for research will get exemption from Income Tax.

Registered as "Public Funded Research Institute" by DSIR, Govt. of India.Export-Import License from DGFT, Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India.

Projects Funded by AICTE in past 3 years:

  • Economization of use of ground water and environmental friendly tanning process. "Implementation of Modern Testing Equipment’s for Up gradation of Quality Assurance System & its Impact on the Development of Data-Base Structure for Comparative Study on Wear-Properties of Different Leather and Non-Leather Soling Materials" by Prof. Anjan Biswas.

CSIR-EMR Project: Sequestration of waste metals from tanneries in East Calcutta Wetland Ecosystem (a recent RAMSAR site). Rational and Productive use of Protein Wastes from the Tannery Industry: UGC-DAE Consortium for Scientific Research 

Workshops and Seminars:-

  • Speech on "Different Sampling methods with special reference to non-invasive sampling techniques" —delivered by Manjari Jain, Research Scholar, Centre for Ecological Science, IISc, Bangalore.
  • Seminar-Workshop on Italian Advanced Tanning Technologies (Machinery and Chemicals) held at Hyatt Regency, Kolkata on 5th February, 2009.
  • NAQC '08: National conference on "Nanotechnology and its application in Quantum Computing" was held in September, 2008.

Cultural Programs:-

There are many social programs are organized in the college throughout the year, by the students of the college, mainly under the banner of Students’ Welfare Association, GCELT. This cultural and social programs provides a platform for all GCELTians- students, faculty and administrative officers to interact mingle and socialise. Every year the students of GCELT conducts the following cultural programme:

Students' Welfare Association:

The students of any educational institute is one of the primary pillars of the institute. Thus every student’s body needs a platform through which they can voice their suggestions, opinions, complains and demands for their and their institute’s betterment. And not only voicing their opinion, but a platform is also very essential for proper communication among the students, faculty and administration.

Tech Fest: Enginerds:

Every year GCELT students with great joy and enthusiasm organizes its annual Tech Fest- “ENGINERDS”.ENGINERDS was first organized in 2010.

Different events including games such as Counter Strike, FIFA, NFS Most Wanted, Poster Making competition, Photography competition, Softronics, Quiz, Mathemagic, and Sudoku were played in Tech fest.

GCELT College Reunion:

PUNORMILON:PUNORMILON is one of the most important cultural event with the get together of all the Ex-Students and Present-Students on the same platform. The event brings great joy with the sharing of feelings, ideas and thoughts of all the seniors, juniors.

 Every year a new committee is formed to organize the PUNORMILON. The events of PUNORMILON include College Performance, Inauguration, Tribute to Alumni, Rabinra Sangeet, Band Performance and also DJ.

Library:
GCELT has a huge RFID facilitated library with more than 18,000 books, 16 National Journals and 12 International Journals.
