About College
Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences & Research was started in 1962 and owes its inception to the vision of late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab and the distinguished medical educationists. The Institute became an autonomous body under the Act of Parliament in 1967 functioning under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
- It was established as a center of excellence which would endeavor to develop patterns of teaching in postgraduate medical education in as many branches as possible and attempt to produce specialists in several disciplines of medicine
- The Institute was declared as an Institute of National importance by an Act of Parliament (Act51 of 1966) with effect from April 01
- It intakes 610 students for MD/MS, 18 students for MDS, 5 students for MHA and 257 students for B. Sc. (Paramedical)
- The institute has been recognized by the National AIDS Control Organization as a centre of excellence in HIV care (COE) and has a voluntary testing and counseling centre (VCTC) on the fourth floor of research A block. The institute provides free treatment of HIV patients at the NACO supported ART Center and COE
- Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences & Research is ranked among the top 50 medical colleges in India, due to the quality education and world class facilities provided to the students

- Prof SD Deodhar, rheumatologist of international eminence who started one of first rheumatology clinics in the country

A number of departments have been designated as research centers by WHO and national agencies. Some of the WHO designated centers include:

Research:
PGIMER is involved in research for the rural and community related environment and health problems. There are two research blocks called Research Blocks A & B which house various basic science departments. Every year nearly 400 research articles are published for the institute in national and international journals.
Extra-Curricular:
- Cultural Activities: College celebrates week long cultural bonanza Spring Fest
- Literary Activity: Students bring out the annual magazine, which provide them an opportunity to demonstrate their literary ideas and writing skills
Hospital:
- The infrastructure for patient care includes the Nehru Hospital
- It is a 1400 bedded hospital with 98 rooms in the 5 private wards and two research blocks for basic sciences
Library:
- The institute has a library called Dr. Tulsi Das Library
- It has total of 45, 696 books and 34 online books along with 510 journals out of which 414 are foreign
- The library is computerized along with OPAC software. It provides Online Medical Journal Database Search facility
- It provides current awareness services, scanning and reprographic services
Sports infrastructure:
- The facilities for indoor as well as outdoor games like table tennis, badminton, cricket, lawn tennis, football etc. have been consistently available to the enthusiasts
- A huge complex for water sports is available

Advanced Pediatrics Centre:
- It has several specialties for the care of children such as Allergy Immunology, Hematology and Oncology, Pediatric Neurology and many others
- It has Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that provides life support to 1000 babies & artificial ventilation to about 200 babies every year
- There is a separate 24 hrs emergency service for children
- This centre also houses surgical specialties for children such as Pediatric Surgery and Pediatric Orthopedics
Advanced Eye Centre:
- The centre runs several special clinics and services viz. Lens, Cornea, Uvea, Glaucoma, Retina and Vitreous, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Contact Lens & Low Vision Aids, Oculoplastic and Tumor Clinics
- For the first time in this country, laser treatment of retinal diseases and glaucoma was started here
Drug de-addiction centre:
- It is operational in PGIMER to take care of patients addicted to substance abuse
- It provides comprehensive care for prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of these patients
- The centre has recreational and indoor sports facilities
