Indira Gandhi Medical College, popularly known as HPMC, was started in 1966. The College is affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla

• On June 29, 2013, Himachal Pradesh Health minister Kaul Singh Thakur said that Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) would be upgraded on the analogy of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Sewa Yojana, (PMSSSY)
• The institute offers various undergraduate and postgraduate courses, it intakes 100 students for MBBS course and 94 students for postgraduate courses. 2550 number of under- graduates has passed out from this Medical College till 2010
• Indira Gandhi Medical College, Shimla has also been granted the status of Regional Cancer Center by the Govt. of India, thus providing much needed comprehensive cancer care to the cancer patient
• In the year 2005 facility of Open Heart Surgery has been made operational and in 2006 MRI facility has been added. Soon second Cobalt Unit & 64 slice MDCT will be made operational
• The college is having 33 departments equipped with latest machinery and equipments like MRI Scan, C.T. Scan, Cobalt Units, Gamma Camera, Solectron, Upper G.I. Endoscope, Colonoscopy, Bronchoscope, Nuclear Medicine facilities, ERCP, Ultrasonography, Haemodialysis, Pacemaker, Holter Monitor, Color Doppler Echo- cardiography, Tread mill test, E. C. G. are in operation

Research

Indira Gandhi Medical College encourages its students and teachers to take part in various research programs. Some of the many research programs undertaken are:

• Evaluation of Risk factors in women with Breast Cancer
• Prediction and assessment of response to treatment of cervical cancer using MRI including parametric imaging

Library

The college library has approximately 8000 books and almost 140 journals are subscribed every year. In addition e-library facility has also been made functional.

Hospital

• Indira Gandhi Hospital which is attached to the college for clinical training has excellent state of the art facilities.It has 743 beds
• The super specialties such as Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery are well established providing facilities such as Cardiac Cath and Open Heart Surgery
• The hospital has well established Orthopedic Centre, Regional Cancer Centre and facilities for endoscopy, bronchoscope, urological
• Multi-storied buildings at Snowdon and Kamla Nehru hospital together contribute 872 beds to IGMC
• State of the art facilities that are recently added are: Open Heart Surgery, MRI, Eye Bank, Telemedicine (Block-D), E-Library, Eye Bank

Scholarships:

• The students belonging to Antodaya Pariwar/IRDP are entitled for an annual financial assistance of worth Rs. 5, 000 and Rs.1, 200 for hostlers
• Two Scholarships of Rs. 25 per month for 16 months to two students on the basis of merit at the result of the first Professional MBBS examinations
• Two scholarships of Rs. 25 per month each to two Himachali students in order of merit based on the number of marks obtained in the entrance test
• A scholarship worth Rs. 1000 per month will be awarded to a needy and deserving student admitted to the MBBS course of study in IGMC, Shimla upto term of 4 and a half years awarded by Shri Manohar Lal Sikka
