About College
Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad was established in 1954 and was recognized by MCI in 1956. It was founded because the original medical college in the area, Osmania Medical College, was unable to keep up with admissions for medical students.
- On 25 June 1955, the college was inaugurated by the first president of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad
- By 1956, the college was in financial trouble, and the government of Hyderabad agreed to take over the college and develop it.
- In 1958, the college was moved to Basheer bagh. The old building has since been demolished. In 2003, the college moved to its new premises in Musheerabad.
- In the 1970s there was a growth in so-called "super specialties" such as cardiology, cardio-thoracic surgery, neurology and neurosurgery.
- Gandhi hospital has distinction of being the first open heart surgery centre of Andhra Pradesh and the first to have Cath lab facilities for training of DM cardiology students.
- Gandhi Hospital is a leading Public Teaching Hospital in Hyderabad, providing free healthcare to all.
- The number of seats for the MBBS program was increased from 100 to 150 students. In the academic year 2013-14, MCI Approved 150 - 200 seats for the MBBS Program.
- The college received permission from MCI for the Postgraduate courses in 1990.
