About College

Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences also known as AIMS is a leading school in medicine, academics and research. It is founded by Sri Mata Amritananadamayi Devi (known as Amma) with a vision to create a non-profit hospital in Kerala to provide a center for healthcare excellence, medical education and research.

• AIMS was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 17th May 1998.
• AIMS is part of the Health Sciences campus of Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Amrita University).
• It is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with the highest grade of A.
• AIMS has developed from a 115 bed specialty hospital to around 1450 bed super-specialty tertiary care Health Centre .
• AIMS has spread over 125 acres of land. There are over 6500 faculty members and more than 4500 staff members at AIMS. There are a total of 45 departments, including 12 super-specialty ones. 

 

 

The Institute is best known for its academic excellence. It has enrolled more than 2200 students in various courses. It offers a wide range of courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing. The centers at Amrita include:

 

 

• Centre for Heart Diseases
• Centre for Digestive Diseases
• Centre for Neuroscience
• Centre for Laboratory Medicine
• Centre for Medical Informatics, Bioinformatics, Multimedia Education and Telemedicine
• Centre for Solid Organ Transplant

Student life at AIMS is more than just study as the institute offers an array of academic, cultural & sports opportunities. AIMS include the following for the overall personality development of their students:

 

 

• Sports facilities that include football fields, basketball courts, & an athletic track.
• Green Friends is an initiative at Amrita which promotes environmental awareness.
• Special language, music, instrument music classes are provided to the interesting students

                

 

 

 

 

AIMS offers several facilities to its students so that they can pursue their courses without any obstruction and achieve the goal of their life through the education offered by it. The facilities offered by the university include Hostel, Sports facility, Library, Guest House and several others.

 

 

 

 

Hostel- AIMS has separated in campus girls and boys hostels. The hostels at AIMS have the following features:

• Rooms of boys’ hostel are 2-3 seaters and girls hostel rooms are 2-6 seaters.
• Number of rooms for boys are 256.s
• There are 5 girls’ hostels with 975 rooms in each hostel.

Library- The library at AIMS fully computerized and is well equipped with a wide collection of books, journals, magazines and online journals. The library is extended to the ladies hostel. The number of books, journals and magazines at AIMS for each of the schools is as follows:

• School of Dentistry -1956 books, 22 journals & 108 online journals
• School of Medicine -8605 books, 250 journals,5 magazines & 122 online journals
• School of Nursing - 2741 books, 14 journals & 6 magazines           
• School of Pharmacy - 2627 books, 35 journals & 8 magazines       

Guest House –

AIMS has a guest house for parents where parents of out station students can stay when they come for admission of their wards or when they come to visit their wards.

Sports & Gymnasium –

Besides having good academic facilities AIMS also provides sports facilities for the students to keep them both mentality and physically fit and active. The facilities for physical development include:

• Sports:- 3 acres land for  sports field, Volley Ball , Shuttle, Tennis, Athletics, Cricket.
• Gymnasium: - Two gyms  (one for Boys and one for Girls)
• Indoor Games: - Carom, Chess, etc.

In addition to the above facilities there are other facilities also that can be availed by students at AIMS are:

Exclusive Students Store where text books, practical materials etc. are available

• Canteens (both vegetarian and non-vegetarian)

Computer Centre- AIMS provides the following facilities to its students and faculty:

• Internet, email & intranet facility both individual and common
• Individual computers from the level of Assistant Professors

 

 

The talents of AIMS students are well characterized by drama & music societies that demeanors regular intra-faculty competitions and inter-collegiate programs. The organization of festivals helps its students to understand the cultural and other values. The participation supports students in enhancing their understanding different values and personality development.

 

 

 

 

 

AIMS is ranked among the tops best medical institutes in India. It has received various awards and recognition too. Some of them are:

 

 

• It received the “National Healthcare Excellence Award 2013” for being the best hospital in the country.
• 150 Best Papers Award at National and International conferences last year.
• Best Integrated Clinical Research work in the country in Nano medicine, Biotechnology and Molecular Medicine.
• Dr. Manitha Nair of AIMS receives DBT's prestigious Innovative Young Biotechnologist Award for her work in Bone Tissue Engineering in June 2013.

 

 

The fee structure at AIMS is reasonable and does not weigh heavy on the pockets of parents. AIMS keeps it in mind that the fee structure should be such that it does not take away the opportunity from any student from getting quality education at AIMS.
