About College

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata is an autonomous research and education institute in the Nadia district of West Bengal. It was established in 2006 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. The institute was established with an aim towards excellence in research in basic science at undergraduate and graduate level with equal emphasis on higher education

  • The institute has an approximately 201 acres campus located near Kalyani in Nadia district. The nearest railway station, Kanchrapara, is located on the Sealdah-Kalyani mainline, about 9 km from the campus
  • The institute act as the main node for the Center for Space Sciences, India(CESSI) a multi-institutional Center of Excellence established through funding from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, GOI
  • The institute has a Max Planck-DST Partner Group of Chemical Ecology under the Department of Biological Sciences funded by Max Plank Society, Germany to study plant-insect interaction
  • The institute follows a bi-semester system, which includes a spring (Jan-May) and autumn (Aug-Dec) semester for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in science. Admissions to Bachelor course are done through  Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) and JEE

Extracurricular/Festivals: The IISER has many functioning student clubs to organize various extracurricular activities. Some of them are listed below-

Clubs

The institute has 17 clubs currently. These clubs organize several events throughout the year which include many competitions, trips, workshops, fun projects, and informal events.

  • Trekking clubs
  • Athletics club
  • Music club

 

Events

The main events that are organized by students of IISER are-

  • Inquivesta- It is the annual science fest. The fest is organized to promote science and innovation among students. The event allows other institutes to participate and know about the cutting edge research going on.
  • Sports meet- IISER initiated IISM (Inter-IISER Sports Meet) in 2012. It witnesses the participation of IISERs and NISER.
  • Annual Cultural Meet- A cultural meet is organized annually where students exhibit their talents. Students who won in several events throughout the year are also awarded during the meet.
  • Department Day- Each department annually organizes its department day to cherish the scientific community.
