About College

Arambagh Girls' College is a women college in Arambagh, in Hooghly district. The college is affiliate to University of Burdwan and recognized by UGC. It has about 1300 students on its rolls studying the Honours and General courses in its nine academic departments.

The college was established in 1995 and on 17 February 1989 Dr. Ashim Dasgupta,current Finance Minister of West Bengal, laid the foundation-stone of the college and former MP and current President of the college Governing Body, Mr. Anil Basu gave support for the development of the college.On 30 August 1995 the college had its first temporary affiliation from the University of Burdwan, in memory of which the College Foundation Day is observed on 30 August every year. Ambitious101 students studying the General Course curriculum and enthusiastic teachers of the neighbouring colleges offered their selfless suppor started the journey of the college. Dr. Satyabrata Bhattacharya of Netaji Mahavidyalaya acted as the Teacher-in-charge (honorary) till 1996. In 1997 the college had already opened its first Honours Departments (English and Sociology); in 1998 it was permanently affiliated under the University of Burdwan. On 2004 college was recognized under Sections 2F and 12B of the U.G.C.

Aim of the college are :

  • To fulfill the educational needs of the girl and to develop skills and self-confidence among girls

  • To help students from semi-urban and rural areas become confident and self-reliant through education

  • To develop moral, mental and physical abilites of students through various extra-curricular activities and value of social service

  • To inculcate the value of scientific outlook through experiments

  • To inculcate the knowledge and ability to utilise the computers

Academic Overview:

 It offers undergraduate honours courses in seven subjects ( English, Bengali, Sociology, Political Science, Histoty, Geography and Sanskrit) and General courses in nine subjects (English / Bengali, History, Sanskrit / Geography, Philosophy, Political Science, Education, Sociology) taught by qualified teachers.

Facilities:

Grievance Redressal Cell

The Grievance Redressal Cell attempts to address genuine problems and complaints of students in a drop box.

Anti-Ragging Committee

As per the directives of the Hon´ble Supreme Court of India, the college has set up a committee which will take appropriate action if any improper conduct / act is brought to its notice.

Students´ Counselling Cell

The cell is to render professional services and counselling to students in personal, academic and career matters

Medical Aid

The college has Student Health Home (Arambagh Regional Centre) in which nominal fee of Rs. 10/ is charged from each student during admission to provide medical aid benefit to the students

Students´ Aid Fund

The college provide scholarships to economically and socially weak students and to physically disabled students.

Students´Corner

The college has canteen and spacious room for indoor games for students.

Computer Training

The college introduced computer training for its students and after the completion of the course certificates are provided.

National Service Scheme

NSS it is organised by the students and teachers for the welfare of the nation.It includes Awareness campaigns on social issues,Campus cleanliness and beautification drives,Annual Camps,Observance of important days.

Library

The college has an ample stock of book, separate reading rooms for teachers and students and subscribes to a few reputed and peer-reviewed journals for the enrichment of the teachers. Some of the good practices of the library include maintenance of Daily Footfall Register´s for teachers and students, keeping a ´Suggestion / Book Recommendation Box´ to get students´ feedback on its facilities and maintenance of a separate collection of Career-oriented books, journals and newspapers.
