The founding of the National Research Centre for Women in Agriculture was recommended by the Working Group on Agricultural Research and Education, which was formed by the Planning Commission during the formulation of the Eighth Five Year Plan in the year 1992-97. The NRCWA was established by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in April 1996 in the city of Bhubaneswar. Accordingly, it was upgraded to Directorate of Research on Women in Agriculture (DRWA) during the year 2008. Since the inception, the college has been aggressive in conducting research on several issues that affect the women in the field of agriculture. The institute has focused on taking participatory action in various technologies based areas that involve rural women. This is done to catalyze and even facilitate research and development institution for including farm women’s perspective in the programs.

The institute has been focusing on taking action research that involves rural women for testing the suitability of their technologies for the women. 3. Contemporary and equipped library –The library of the institute takes care of the requirements of the scientists. The books and journals in the library are stocked to expand the knowledge in the field of agriculture, gender disparity, social science and several allied subjects.
4. Gender Knowledge Centre –A portal has been created on the website by the name Gender Knowledge Center. The objective is to share all the information related to gender with the stakeholders.
