ICT was founded in 1933 as a University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT) of the University if Mumbai. It was renamed as the Mumbai University Institute of Chemical technology (Autonomous) in 2002.ICT is considered to be the best post graduate centre in India and comparable to the best in the world.
In 2004, institute got complete autonomy. And in 2008 it was granted the deemed university status and renamed as ICT.
It was pinned elite badge by state government of Maharashtra. And this has put this institute on a par with institutes like IITs, IISc etc. It has produced many industrialists, academics, bureaucrats like Mukesh Ambani, Dr. K. Anji Reddy etc.
It has been receiving various grants and projects from UGC, DAE, DBT, DST and other agencies with several centres of excellence :Food engineering and technology, Centres of Advanced Studies in Chemical Engineering, UGC Networking resource Centre in chemical Engineering
The Spirit:
It is the official bimonthly cultural magazine cum newsletter of ICT. It highlights the achievements of current students, alumni etc.
Bombay Technologist :
It is the annual technical journal of the Technological Association.it publishes technical articles covering areas of science and technology.
ICT is the first preference for the chemical, textile, Bio-tech, and other related industry companies. Being constantly ranked among top colleges for chemical and related engineering, it has gained a tremendous response from the industry. Also, the strong alumni factor also makes the hot-spot for the recruitment process.

The hostels are providing all kinds of facilities. They are neat and clean. The rooms are also very spacious.
LIBRARY:-
ICT library is one of the best special libraries in the country. It acts as an academic library as well as a research library. It is housed in a separate two-story building.
There is a number of collections in the library.
INFORMATION PROCESSING CENTER:-
It provides internet and intranet connectivity to the entire ICT through a fiber optic backbone. It has 150 personal computers. It has 2 laptops and 1 projector. It also houses a number of servers e.g. Siddhi server, email server, etc.
SPORTSAGA :
It is the annual sports festival of ICT. It has drawn sports enthusiasts from all over the country. It organizes various events in different sports field e.g. Athletics, cricket, badminton, basketball, chess, futsal, etc.
Vortex :
It is the Chemfest of ICT which witnesses over 2000 participants from various colleges to showcase their chemical engineering skills.
Manzar:
It is the annual cultural festival of ICT
Texpressions:
It is the cultural festival holed by the division of fibers and textiles.
