About College

The University of Calcutta, also known as Calcutta University is a public state university located in Kolkata, West Bengal, established on 24 January 1857 by the Act of Legislative Council (Act No II of 1857) of the British India. It is the first institution in South Asia to be established as a multidisciplinary and western style university. The court of Directors of East-India-Company had ordered the Governor- General of India to establish the Universities in three cities of India, namely Bombay, Madras and Calcutta.

  • At that time, University of Calcutta was established under the administration of Lord Canning, the Governor General of India
  • The first Chancellor of the university Governor General Lord Canning and Sir J.W.Colvile, the erstwhile Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was the Vice-Chancellor  
  • Initially University of Calcutta followed the pattern of University of London, which was later modified
  • Now, the University is governed by the Calcutta University Act 1979
  • At present the University is a state government University and is considered Asia’s largest University based on the strength of the students
  • University awarded 5 star by NAAC in 2001
  • UGC declared Calcutta University as "University with Potential for Excellence" on 8 December,2005
  • In 2010 NAAC ranked university as 'A grade'

Students Association: The University of Calcutta inspires and helps the students to be involved in community activities apart from their excellence in academics.

  • With the leadership of Calcutta University Student’s Union (CUSU), the students of the university are involved in the community and extracurricular activities.
  • CUSU is the India’s biggest union of students with more than 13,000 students working actively, with a separate autonomous student’s body.
  • Some of the common activities organized by the students in and outside the university are as follows:
  • Ceremonial welcome party for the fresher’s named, “PARICHAY”
  • Annual Cultural Festival “CAMPUS” with various cultural performances.
  • Every year sports and cultural festival is organized by the students.
  • Various social activities like Blood donation Camp, Flood relief camps, collection of relief money and many more such social programs are conducted time to time by CUSU.

Facilities:

Library: University started its first library in 1870s. Now university has 39 department libraries, central library, 2 campus libraries and 2 libraries advanced centres. University library has 10,00,000+ books,20000+ bound journals etc.

Hostel: University has 17 hostels out which 8 hostels are for girls and 7 are for boys. Out of 17, 13 are for UG students

Centre for Research in Nanosciences and Nanotechnology: It was developed for creation of centre of excellence for interdisciplinary research in Nanosciences and Nanotechnology.

Manuscript Library: The Library has a collection of more than 42,000 manuscripts including quite a few on palm leaves, including 20,000 in Sanskrit, 12,000 in Tibetan and Bengali and also several Persian and Arabic manuscripts
