Jadavpur University (JU), Kolkata was established in 1955. The university is an educational and research institution in India.At present Jadavpur University is an internationally recognized premier university of the country and it has been accorded the highest grading and rated as a "Five Star University" in India by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
- It is situated at Campus No.1, Raja S.C. Mallik Road Kolkata in the state of West Bengal.
- The University has been recognised by the UGC.
- It has also been approved by the AICTE.
- The University has been accredited by the NAAC.
- NCE afterward has been looking after the College of Engineering and Technology, Bengal.
- The West Bengal Government and the Government of India decided to enact the required legislation to set up JU on the December 24, 1955.
- Presently, this University is the top most University that is serving the country with its excellent education.
- There are various extension other courses that gives ample scope for the ‘drop-outs’ to carry on with their studies.
- There are two campuses - at Salt Lake and while the primarycampus is at Raja S.C. Mullik Road.
Research Collaborations: The university earmarks Rs. 15 lakhs of its own funds every year to support research activities by students.Twenty-two out of the university's thirty-six departments have been recognised by, and have been receiving funds from, national and international agencies, primarily because of their research output. The quantum of assistance received from external agencies during the year 2012-13 for research was nearly Rs 30 crores, not including funds received under TEQIP and the DST-PURSE schemes.

Alumni Association and Triguna Sen Auditorium: The Alumni Association is one of the oldest in the country which was founded in 1921 by the ex-students of National Council of Education.
- The alumni of Jadavpur living abroad helped fellow-Jadavpurians to be admitted to various Universities and research institutions in Boston, Michigan, Edinburg, Cornell, Pittsburgh, Munich etc.
- For the first few years of its existence, the activities of the Alumni Association were mainly educational, practically confined to the guidance of and assistance to the NCE and the development of the BTI (Bengal Technical Institute).
- The connections of the Alumni Association with the NCE, the BTI and, later, the College of Engineering & Technology (CET) considerably helped these institutions to spread & improve engineering and technological education in India.
Major Activities & Achievements:
- Dr. Anwesha Aditya, a Ph.D. scholar at the Department of Economics, winning the IEDRA Award 2013 of the EXIM Bank of India, for her Ph.D. thesis.
- Bichitra Tagore Online Variorum completed and launched by President of India on 5 May.

Activities:-
National Service Scheme (NSS): The National Service Scheme (NSS) had its birth on September 24th, 1969, during the Gandhi Centenary year. The scheme was launched in 37 universities comprising 40,000 students. Today NSS has become the largest Government organization of students in the country comprising members from the +2 level to the college and also at the university level. The strength of volunteers has now increased to more than thirty lakhs, which makes the NSS one of the largest student’s forces in the world.
Students' Union: The University has three Student’s Unions for the three Faculties. This was established to promote corporate life, to foster among the students love and loyalty to the University, to help the growth of closer social and cultural reactions between teachers and students, and to foster a spirit of co-operative activities among the students, in the interest of closer relations with students of other Universities in India and abroad.
TEQIP: Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) was envisaged as a long-term programme of about 10 to 12 years duration to be implemented in 2 or 3 phases for transformation of the Technical Education System with the World Bank assistance.

Jadavpur University has been one of the 127 institutions selected for TEQIP Phase I for which an MOU was signed between the State of West Bengal and Faculty of Engineering and Technology.

As per TEQIP design, each phase is required to be designed on the basis of lessons learnt from the implementation of an earlier phase. TEQIP-I started a reform process in 127 Institutions.
JU Community Radio Station: 90.8 Mhz: Jadavpur University has launched its own Community Radio Station, RadioJU on April 14th 2008. It is the first of its kind in Eastern India. This Community Radio Station is being set up as part of the ongoing JU Project TEQIP in collaboration with School of Media Communication and Culture, JU to promote community interactions and dissemination of all kinds of knowledge.
Clubs & Societies:
Science Club:
- For the last 13 years, the Science Club has been organising the annual, Tech-Fair on the University campus. The Fair presents all aspects of technology, its underlying purpose is to create a social motivation among the students to develop technology in the interest of the masses.
- The Club also conducts seminars and lectures on scientific subjects and controversies. It publishes its own magazine, 'Anveshan'. It participates in various science fairs.
Mountaineering & Hiking Club:
- This is a particularly active club. So far, it has conducted six major Himalayan expeditions, in course of which quite a few students have scaled heights of 20,000 feet and above.
- Every year, the Club organises rock climbing courses at elementary and basic level, and also arranges trekking expeditions during the Puja vacation.
The Jadavpur University Mountaineering and Hiking Club (JUMHC) conducted a trek to Goecha La, Sikkim, between 10th & 20th June 2012. An expedition to the summit of Mount Yunum (20,070 ft.) was successfully completed by a seven-member JUMHC team on 18 June 2012.
- Photographic Club: The Photographic Club has won many laurels, both national and international. It has its own darkrooms, studio & exhibition facilities. The Club organises intra-club and All India Inter-Club contests as well as exhibitions.
- Music Club: The Music Club organises singing and dancing classes. The Club has regular programmes on All India Radio and occasionally with Doordarshan.
- Quiz Forum and Debating Society (QFDS): The Debating Society has produced a band of debaters of all-India repute. It organizes inter-department debate and quiz competitions and occasionally inter-college programmes.
- Film Society: The JU Film Society is recognised by the Indian Film Federation. It has its own projection room and library. It organises a number of screenings of famous and award-winning films round the year, as well as an annual film festival over 3-4 days. It also publishes its own journal,'Katha', 'Galpa', 'Chhabi'.
- Drama Club: The Drama Club organises theatrical functions which include formal plays and dance dramas as well as group theatre & street drama. It also conducts drama workshops & holds exhibitions and poster exhibitions on drama and theatre. JU Drama Club organised UTTARAN 2012, an inter-college theatre festival in October 2012.

Library: The University Central Library is housed in a three-storied building. Its shelf space and working space is 36,000 sq. ft., approximately and is being extended by new construction of Annex Building 5,500 sq. ft. (approx.).
- Seven reading rooms, carrels & an alcove for bound volumes of journals provide sitting accommodation for 700 readers. There is a separate library on the second Campus at Salt Lake. The space of the Salt Lake Library is 6,500sq. ft.
- The University is proud of its library system, which comprises the Central Library, Salt Lake Campus Library and 36 Departmental Libraries under the Faculty of Science, Arts, Engineering and Technology. This is the third largest library in West Bengal.
Collections:
- The Central Library has over 6,46,296 volumes of books on record (including the Salt lake Campus Library and those loaned to Departmental Libraries), 80,700 bound volumes of journals, 13000 theses and dissertations, and 37,000 items of non-book materials such as reports pamphlets, maps and micro-forms.
- At present, the library subscribes to about 633 print and 2794 online journals.
- The University also has access to around 9082 online journals more through INFLIBNET and INDEST Consortia.
- The University Library has access to around 12530 Journals.
- The library subscribes to 30 databases which include Scopus, Econlit etc. & also about 10,057 E-books.
