Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is the nation’s seventh IIT located in Roorkee, Uttarakahand. IIT Roorkee was established in 1847 by the then lieutenant governor James Thomason as Thomason College of Civil Engineering (1847-1948) and it was given university status in 1949 and remained University of Roorkee till 2001. It was converted into IIT in 2001 by an act of Government of India and an ordinance is now converted into act by parliament to make IIT, Roorkee an Institution of National Importance.
The IIT Roorkee has produced many alumni who played important roles in the technological development of India and made significant impact on corporate world. Among them ten alumni have won Padma Bhushan awards and 25 have been Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology awardees.
Academic Overview: IIT Roorkee is one of the biggest technical institutions in the country having the largest number of academic units. It has 21 academic departments covering engineering, applied sciences, humanities & social sciences academic centers, 3 centers of excellence and some supporting units.

Library is named Mahatma Gandhi Central Library. It has collection of more than 3,50,000 documents in all media. The library building is Wi-Fi empowered with 75 terminals for browsing through online books and journals. It can accommodate more than 500 readers at a time. |

The campus has 19 hostels of which 10 are boys’ hostel, three girls’ hostel and 6 hostels for married people. Each hostel is given specific name such as- Boys’ Hostels-

Cognizance |

It is the cultural festival held in October every year. It has steadily grown into one of the largest youth festivals of the region. Its current status as the 'Official Youth Festival of Uttarakhand', bestowed on it by the Government of Uttarakhand |
Srishti |
