SASTRA University, Thanjavur was established in 1984 in the form of Shanmugha College of Engineering which is now renamed, Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy [SASTRA]. It has carved a niche for itself as a Centre for fostering and developing the body, mind and sprit of its students. Research & Development:
‘SIRO’ Status for SASTRA: SASTRA has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India. Currently SASTRA is engaged in research for various agencies like AYUSH, CSIR, CMRI, DBT, DRDL, DRDO, ISRO, DST, ICMR, etc.
SASTRA & Society:
SASTRA has also been sensitive and responsive to societal needs. Every year, SASTRA donates 5 kg rice, ½ kg toor dhal and 1 kg jaggery to about 1800 families of neighboring five villages (Tirumalaisamudram, Nattani, Vallampudur, Munnaiyampatti & Kuruvadipatti) for Makara Sankaranthi. Apart from this, SASTRA also lends help during natural calamities such as earthquake, tsunami, floods, etc.
Campaign on Road Safety: A massive road safety awareness campaign was launched on June 19, 2009 in which material regarding road safety and the importance of wearing helmet to more than 5000 two–wheeler riders at five strategic locations in Trichy.
Green SASTRA: The Green SASTRA project was launched on 17th August 2009 by Mr. M. B. Nirmal, Founder Chairman, EXONARA International and 120 tree saplings were planted by the students.
Student’s Activities:
DAKSH, the international techno-management festival, is an annual event comprising of a myriad of events involving all trades of engineering. Having started in 2007, DAKSH is running into its eighth edition now. DAKSH presents an opportunity to students from across the globe to display their techno-managerial skills while participating in a plethora of exciting events, assorted workshops, excellent power talks and social responsibility campaigns that are conducted over a period of three days in the month of February.
BIOTIKOS: While the old and fundamental sciences are being literally “re-searched” to pull out more and more facts and understand them in tremendous detail, there exists a section of research that concentrates on how to apply the results of the former to improve the quality of life on earth. BIOTIKOS activities happen year-round. It has the weekly TECH-FORUM sessions that serve as an excellent mode of interaction between the juniors & seniors.
National Cadet Corps (NCC): NCC Organization - In view of the changing socio-economic environment, an exercise was undertaken by the Ministry of Defence to make aims of NCC in tune with the aspirations of the youth.Training Camps - NCC organizes training camps for students in rural and urban areas. Students who have not got opportunity for community living, enjoy these camps the most.
National Service Scheme (NSS): NSS under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports Government of India was launched in Gandhiji's Birth Centenary Year 1969, in 37 Universities involving 40,000 students with primary focus on the development of personality of students through community service. Today, NSS has more than 3.2 million student volunteers on its roll spread over 298 Universities and 42 (+2) Senior Secondary Councils and Directorate of Vocational Education all over the country.
NSS Activities:Seven units of 100 student volunteers each lead by a faculty member are functioning in the University. SASTRA has been awarded the best blood donation camp organizer by the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society for having donated 927 units of blood in a single year.The service activities include –
SASTRA Community Out Reach Programme (SCORE): SCORE was formally inaugurated by the former President of India Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam during the SASTRA Silver Jubilee inauguration on 2nd October 2008.1200 students were divided into 120 groups and carried out social engineering projects on Health and Sanitation, Computer Awareness, Literacy awareness, Energy Conservation, Water quality testing, Legal Awareness, Awareness about various central and state government schemes, Environmental management and Women’s rights in six neighbouring villages.
Clubs & Activities:
The various Student's Clubs of SASTRA - Literary Club, Auto Club, Oratory and Debating Club, JAM Club, Fine Arts Club, Quiz Club, etc. conduct weekly meetings to bring out and develop the talents of the students. These clubs have helped SASTRA secure honours in various inter-college cultural competitions like SAARANG, FESTEMBER, RIVERA, etc.DAKSH & KURUKSASTRA are SASTRA's National Level Annual Technical and Cultural festivals respectively and is conducted by the various student clubs.COLOSSEUM & FUERA are SASTRA's inter and intra college sports competitions.
Amenities:
Library: Saraswathi Sadan, the library of the university is an architectural elegance over an area of about 47,000 sq ft with modern study area, audio visual room, internet and reprographic facilities.
Hostel: There are 9 boys hostel and 6 girls hostels providing accommodation to over 4000 boys and 2400 girls.
The hostels provide amenities for living, dining and recreation that makes each inmate feel at home. They provide a right atmosphere for intellectual stimulation and balanced growth.
Indoor Stadium: An indoor stadium “MARUTI” has been constructed and equipped with billiards tables, a basketball court, badminton courts, table tennis, and carrom board.

SASTRA University Ranked 40th among 'Top 100 Engineering Institutes for Research and Teaching' in India by National Institutional Ranking Framework (MHRD) in 2016. SASTRA University offers various undergraduate and post graduate courses in Science, Engineering, Management, Education, Law and Arts besides various Doctoral programmes. For admissions to the B.Tech./ Integrated M.Tech. programmes, one should qualify the following criteria: The candidates should have passed 10+2 or its equivalent from a recognized state or central board of education with mathematics and physics as mandatory subjects along with either Chemistry, Bio-Tehcnology, Biology, computer science with a minimum of 60% aggregate in these subjects. Total available seats in the B.Tech. programme, 70% will be filled by the students who appear for JEE (Mains). Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of entrance examination marks and the performance of the candidate in 10+2 qualifying examination as per the following weightage: JEE (Mains) 25% Weightage & 10+2 normalized marks 75% Weightage.
