- 1987 is the year when the institute got established as Regional Engineering College
- The Government of India gave it the status of National Institute of Technology – a Deemed University – on October 17, 2002 with the support of Ministry of HRD, New Delhi.
- It has also been declared by the HRD Ministry of the Government of India as an “Institute of National Importance” under the Parliament Act of 2007.
- The institute provides excellent placement opportunities being visited by the top industries of the country who select the final year students for job.
- The campus of the institute has an area extending over 154 acres and is surrounded by nature’s beauty providing ideal atmosphere for the students.
- The area of the NITJ campus has three functional sections in which it is divided namely Institution zone for teaching departments, centers and administration, Institution zone for the faculty and staff and Residential zone for the faculty and staff

Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP):
Its objectives are:
- Strengthening Institutions to produce high-quality engineers for better employability
- Scaling-up postgraduate education and demand-driven Research & Development and Innovation
- Establishing Centers of Excellence for focused applicable research
- Training of faculty for effective Teaching
- Enhancing Institutional and System Management effectiveness
Women Cell:
To facilitate a gender-sensitive and congenial working environment at NIT Jalandhar so that women employees and female students are not subjected to gender-specific discrimination or sexual harassment.
Facilities:
Hostel
- Separate hostel for boys and girls- seven for boys and two for girls
- Each hostel is facilitated with a reading room, indoor games, and so on
- Hostel wardens look after the discipline and security of the hostel

Library
- NITJ library has in its collection, a total of 1, 03, 456 volumes of books, standards, these, CD-ROM, bound volumes of journals, and video cassettes
- It is also endowed with a video viewing facility, audiovisual amenities, and a multimedia projector. Total 1, 850 videocassettes and CDs are there in its collection.
- The library is subscribed to 106 journals and magazines on current issues and almost all the daily newspapers

Festival:
- TechNITi: A techno-management fest that is usually the highlight of student life on campus. The fest involves events from all the departments, including robotics, workshops, guest lectures, and informal.
- Utkansh: A cultural fest that aims at drawing out the creative side of the techies on campus.
Ranking:
In 2012, NIT Jalandhar was ranked 13th out of 30’s NIT
College Infrastructure and Facility
