About College

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, known as TIFR is a reward of commitment and dedication. It is a deemed University which offers master’s and doctoral programs

  • HOMI J BHABA, who has a great contribution to develop Indian Atomic Energy Program, was the founder and first director of TIFR which has been established on 1st June, 1945 by a huge financial assistance of J.R.D Tata, then chairman of Tata Group
  • The institute began its journey in the campus of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore but later it has been moved to Mumbai
  • In Colalaba, TIFR was appeared with a new campus, designed by Chicago-based architect Helmuth Brastch was launched by Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on January 15th, 1962
  • TIFR has achieved Grade “A” by MHRD
  • TIFR has been marked as one of the best institute in Asian top 100 institutions

Contributions

Brilliant Contributions in the field of mathematics is known to whole world from its inception, which have come from school of Mathematics, TIFR.

The memorable contribution from TIFR mathematics experts are:

  • C. S. Seshadri's work on projective modules over polynomial rings
  • M. S. Narasimhan's results in the theory of pseudo differential operators

Facilities

Hostel

Accommodation is provided only for PhD and I-PhD students at nominal Cost. Rooms are of category like:

A-type – Single room with one bed and shared bathroom & toilet.

C-type – Single room with two beds and attached bathroom & toilet.

D-type – One room with two beds with attached bathroom & toilet, Kitchenette, Hall and living area.

Library

The library of TIFR has a huge collection of books, journals.

A fully computerized library with facilities of microfilm, audio-video & microfiche reading helps to research on various topics.

VSRP

 

The Visiting Students Research Program (VSRP) is organized per year in summer season by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.

VSRP is imparted in the subjects Physics and Astronomy, Biology and Computer Science, Chemistry and Mathematics.

A Large workshop & Glass blowing Section

For manufacturing high precision instruments a large workshop and a glass blowing section are consisted.

TIFR is trailblazer of research work in various fields has resulted in the initiation of some new national organization like the Technology, NCST & the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER)

Health Care

There is a medical centre for health needs of members. 

It provides good treatment to Institute member, official visitors, research fellow, VSRP students &research scholars.

Scholarships

  • Ph.D. Students receive a monthly scholarship of Rs.16,000/-  which is increased to Rs.18,000/- after registration & an annual contingency grant of Rs.20,000/-, in addition to a tuition grant which covers the annual fee  Rs.4000/-.
  • M.Sc. (Biology) Students receive a monthly scholarship of Rs12,000/- and the annual fee is Rs.2000​

      The Institute runs a graduate programme leading to the award of Ph.D., Integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. as well as M.Sc. degreee in certain subjects. The Graduate Programme at TIFR is classified into the following Subjects - Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer & Systems Sciences (including Communications and Applied Probability) and Science Education. It is conducted at the Mumbai campus and various National Centres of TIFR.
