Central Institute of Fisheries Education is one of the leading Universities of the country which provides quality education on fisheries and allied fields. It is one of the oldest universities of the nation.

  • The University is situated at Mumbai, Maharastra.
  • It was incorporated in the year 1961 on 6th June and is recognized by UGC.
  • It was incorporated under the Ministry of Agriculture and Government of India. Indian Council of Agricultural Research joined to in the year 1979.
  • It has received the status of a Deemed University in the year 1989.
  • The university has been outstanding in the development of fisheries sector. It has three basic sections,  that are teaching research and extension. 
  • The courses offered by the university are categories as two streams. They are Science courses and Agriculture Science and Technology Courses.
  • Science Courses includes M.F. Sc., Ph.D. (Fishery Science) and Ph.D. (Resource Management).
  • On the other hand, Agriculture Science and Technology courses have M.F. Sc. (Freshwater Agriculture), M.F. Sc. (Inland Agriculture), M.F. Sc. (Mariculture), Ph.D. (Mariculture).

The duration of Ph.D. in Resource Management and Mariculture are of three years. Duration of all other remaining courses is of two years.The institute is well known for its excellent facilities in academic research and education in the fisheries sector. It has managed to tie up with several national and international level fisheries institutions to ensure that the university may get the best facilities for training and research. It is enabled with modern technologies and also trying to improve the human resource. Initially, the university was offering couple of degrees courses that are Inland Aquaculture and Fisheries Resource Management. But now it has moved up to eleven different disciplines.  Currently the Institute is offering specialized courses at Master’s and Ph. D. in all the eleven disciplines.

The university has four divisions. Professional Development programmes (PDP) is being offered at the Kolkata centre. This programme contains four modules of four months each. It also offers Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) of six months duration.

The university offer international standard education facility and one of the leading institutes in proving high quality research facility. For that reason, it has managed to attract number of foreign researchers along with students from all across the country.  The admission policies are fair and it depends upon the merit of the student.
