Indira Gandhi National Tribal University was established in the year 2007 under the Parliament Act, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Act 2007 by Govt. of India. University is established with an objective of new avenues of good quality higher education and various research facilities for students from the tribal communities of India.

Extracurricular Activities:
National Cadet Corps: This unit was started in university in July 2013. It is started to establish character, discipline, comradeship, outlook, the spirit of adventure, secular and ideals of self-service amongst the youth of the nation.
National Service Scheme: The objective of this unit is to enable students to work in the community. This program is to teach social welfare to the students.
Innovation Club: It is a joint venture of the university and local communities developed in order to explore innovative ideas, technologies, and methodologies in local groups and tribal communities.
Facilities:
Central Library: IGNTU library is the focal point of information for the student community. The regular development of the library ensures good access to knowledge. Currently, the library has 24898 books in its collection and has 2300 approx. users. The library is fully automated with the use of Libsys7 software.
