About College

Gauhati University was established in 1948 under the Guwahati University Act 1947. This is the first university in North East India. The University which started functioning from the city center was shifted to the present campus in 1955-56. The objective of the University is to revitalize its educational leadership and transform the University from an institution of higher education to an institution of higher development of the intellect, the will, and the moral through continuous self-development, collaboration, and sharing of knowledge with institutions of excellence

• The University campus is situated at the western fringe of Guwahati, about 15 kilometers from the city center and with the mighty Brahmaputra to the North
• The university has been accredited with a 4-star rating by the NAAC
• University is funded by the UGC and the Government of Assam for research and other academic activities

Library: The University’s Krishna Kanta Handiqui Library is a designated 'Manuscript Conservation Centre' (MCC) under the National Mission for Manuscripts established in 2003

Festivals -

• Code-o-tricks - It is a competition for passionate programmers. It is to solve problems where the skill of C or C++ is to be used as a tool to solve the given problem.
• Gods of Arena - Manual Robotics is the one in which the human controls the robot using a joystick or switches
• Photo blitz 2011-It is a photography competition
• Fingoole - Google – A six-letter word that marks its massive impression on the World Wide Web in the Search Engine category. Every one of us might have used Google – knowingly or unknowingly, to search our required contents
• Intercollege Youth Festival (2013 -14)- It is the latest festival held at the University

Gauhati University, the oldest higher educational institution in the North East region, has been awarded the European Awards for Best Practices 2014 by the European Society for Quality Research (ESQR) on 1st June 2014 in a gala event at hotel Le Plaza in Brussels.
