About College
Cotton College, the premier seat of higher learning in Northeast India, was established in 27th May, 1901. The college was named in honor of Sir Henry Stedman Cotton for appreciating his real concern for the cause of higher education in the local region. Initially, the college was affiliated to the Calcutta University and after the establishment of Gauhati University in the year 1948 the college became a constituent unit of the university. The College has been accredited ‘Grade A’ by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC).
- University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified it as a ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ in 2005
- The College has an infrastructure built on a sprawling campus covering an area of about 34 acres
- The College has an 'Internal Quality Assurance Cell' to look after the internal quality of the institution
- Cotton College Women Forum (CCWF) is carrying out research on women related issues of the North-East India

Placement:
A large number of companies conduct campus recruitment drives in the college. The companies that have visited the college campus include State Bank of India, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Tata Consultancy Services, IBM-Daksh Federal Bank, South Indian Bank, HSBC Bank, Wipro Technologies, Infosys, HCL, Reliance Retail Ltd., SBI Life Insurance and Vedanta Aluminium. .

- Sports persons will be selected from those disciplines which are recognized by IOC and BCCI and also such sports which are included in All India University meets
Extracurricular Activities
- NSS: It is functioning with a strength of 100 volunteers since 1982 in Cotton College
- Scouts and guides activity has been introduced in Cotton College form the session (2002-03) in the wake of state Government’s decision to make it compulsory for all educational institutions in the state
- Manik Chandra Barooah Memorial Debating Competition: Every year, the MCB Debating Competition is held in the 2nd week of September. This competition has been providing a platform for discussion on current affairs and problems facing the society, emerging as a keen forum for social and intellectual consciousness of the state
- Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC): EDC is primary aim and objective is to foster as well as promote entrepreneurial mind set and culture among the students and unemployed educated youth of this part of the country. EDC has organized 8 Entrepreneurship Awareness Programmes (EAP), 8 Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDP), 3 Technology based Entrepreneurship Programmes (TEDP) and 2 Skill Development Training Programmes
- Central Instrumentation Centre (CIC): CIC has acquired an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (Model : AA 240, Make : Varian VB, the Netherlands) using a part of the grant provided by the UGC under the scheme ‘Rejuvenation of Basic Scientific Research in Indian Universities/PG Colleges’
- Cotton College Research Council: It has a mission and a vision of nurturing, encouraging and flourishing research activities in the college by organizing seminars, workshops, conferences etc. It brings out an annual publication entitled “RJCC - Research Journal of Contemporary Concern”, which is devoted to publishing refereed papers covering original research work with contemporary relevance in the fields of both sciences and humanities
- Cotton College Women Forum (CCWF): The Cotton College Women forum aims at the advancement of women of the state of Assam in particular and the women of the North-East in general. At present, CCWF has undertaken some extension activities for underpriviledged children and women of remote areas under the CPE scheme, sponsored by the UGC
Cottonian Magazine: It is the annual journal of the Cotton College family reflecting the experiences and aspirations of the Cottonians.
Scholarship:
There is a scholarship section in the College Office, which is responsible for all matters relating to various Scholarships. Generally the following categories of scholarship are available to the meritorious students:
