Chikkanna Government Arts College, Tiruppur was established in 1966. It is affiliated with Bharathiar University and accredited with Grade ‘B+’ by NAAC. It is recognized by UGC under section 2(f) and 12(B) of UGC Act. The college works with the objective of providing higher educational opportunities to economically poor and socially backward rural people of Tirupur. The vision of the college is to develop the institution into a premier and exemplary Centre of Higher Learning for rural and socio-economically backward students aimed at achieving a knowledge society with commitment to Nation building. The college is situated in the scenic and sprawling campus of 40 acres located at the heart of the dollar city, Tirupur.

Extra Curricular Activities
NSS - There are four units functioning in the college. The NSS volunteers work towards improving the sanitary conditions of those villages, create awareness about AIDS, RWH. The various activities performed under NSS unit are - special camps, seminars, anti-ragging awareness programmes, student training programmes, tree plantation and cleanliness activities.
NCC - A senior division NCC unit of the college has been raised during 1971-72 with a full company of 200 cadets. The cadets undergo various training like - drill, firing, trekking, aero modeling, gliding, cultural activities, games, rock climbing, theoretical classes on war tactics, weapon, map reading. NCC Cadets are also involved in social awareness programmes like cancer, aids awareness, blood donation campaign etc.

The college has 02 hostels, Gents Hostel with capacity of 250 male students and Ladies Hostel with capacity of 100 female students (Outside the Premises). |

Dr. A. Mohankumar, Department of Zoology has submitted sequential data on Lactobacillus which has been included in international database center (NCBI), USA in 2012.
