Guru Nanak College was established in 1970 to mark the 500th birth anniversary of the Holy Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak. It comes from the Sikh Minority Degree College and is governed by Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee. The main objective of the college was to create a plinth that can impart knowledge, as well as value based education in the young, energetic youth of Dhanbad. It stresses upon moral education to the earnest so that along the everyday jobs of earning livelihood, their students also earn respect and praises for being ethical. In the year 1997, the campus of boys was shifted to Bhuda, which is 4 km away from the town and penetrates in the tribal area, to promote education among the tribal population. This has been a success, since around 2000 students have enrolled in various courses. The college also has a wing for vocational studies.The college is also making ICT technologies available for students in order to make the education technological-friendly.
