Environmental Management and Policy Research Institute is an autonomous institution that aims at conducting applied research on environmental issues and providing training and advisory services to government, industry and civil society. The vision of the institute is to become a knowledge centre inspiring and enabling society to create an environment of harmony between man and nature. The college was established with the mission is to provide world-class training and advisory services on environmental management to enable and encourage civil society and government to safeguard and manage natural resources effectively. The institute is anchored at Department of Forest, Ecology & Environment and headed by the Director General appointed by Government of Karnataka. Its Governing Body consist of representatives of the government, comprising Department of Forest, Ecology & Environment, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), Department of Urban Development, Department of Industries & Commerce, Department of Health & Family Welfare, Department of Finance and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Since 2007, EMPRI is supported by Government of Germany through the Integrated Expert Programme of CIM. In 2008 the former Indo-Norwegian Environmental Project (INEP) was integrated into EMPRI, leading to a further expansion of the mandate.
