The Institute of Home Economics is a leading college for women opened in the year 1961 by a Registered Co-operative Society. It was started with the aim of facilitating proficient education in Home Science to all the girls of society. Institute of Home Economics became a constituent college of University of Delhi in 1969.

The Library System comprises of a Central Library & 11 departmental libraries which cooperatively support the research, teaching & extension programs of the Institute.

The Institute great endeavors on physical fitness of the students & arranges a weekly physical education session for students of all courses.
The Institute of Home Economics conducts festivals and encourages its students to take part in them so that they learn cultural values, management techniques and leadership skills. It holds an annual cultural festival, ‘Melange’. The festival offers a stage to students to showcase their flairs & also an opportunity to interconnect with students of other colleges.
The Delhi University holds a competitive Examination in Delhi each year for the award of All India Entrance Scholarships (fifty) 50 in number, of the value of Rs. 250 per month, tenable for three years for pursuing a course of study for an honors degree of this University.
