UNIVERSITY OF HYDERABAD

University of Hyderabad is a Central University and was established under the Parliament Act on 2nd October, 1974. It is one of the Most Prestigious Universities for post graduate teaching and research in India. The University is approved by University Grants Commission (UGC) and it is also completely financed by it. It has been accredited as Grade “A*****” university by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The University was awarded as the Best Central University in India by President of India.

It is a Public Research University located in Hyderabad city, Telangana, India. The Governor of the state of Telangana is the ex-officio of the University while President of India is the Visitor to the University. Mr. Gurubaksh Singh was the first Vice- chancellor of the University and he served from 1974 to 1979. The first chancellor to the University was Mr. B D Jatti. The University has a very huge campus with around 5,000 students, most of them being residential students and around 400 faculty members.

The University offers Various Postgraduate Courses such as Master’s Programme which is of 2 years of duration, M.Phil which of 18 months and Ph.D Programme which is of 5 years of duration. The University offers courses in various streams such as economics, history, anthropology, Telugu, Mathematical sciences, Chemical Sciences, Language Sciences, English, Literature, physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, painting, arts, history, visual studies, computer science, artificial intelligence, information technology, kuchipudi dance, bharatnatyam dance, bio-informatics, and sculpture. The University offers PH.D Programmes in Dalit and Adivasi studies, English language studies, women studies, Management studies, Space and Earth Sciences, Indian Diaspora and many other fields also.

The University has twelve Schools of Study through which it offers various courses to its students. Some of the schools are single-discipline; some have departments and centres which are attached to them. Inter-school and inter disciplinary teaching and research has always been promoted and emphasised in the University. Let’s discuss about the Schools of Study and departments:

1. SCHOOL OF MATHEMATIC AND STATISTICS

The aim of the school is to train those people who want to do research and get knowledge in the advanced areas of Mathematics and statistics. The school offers research facilities in the areas such as

  • Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Topology, Algebraic Number Theory, Dynamical Systems.
  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Regression Diagnostics, Order Statistics, Reliability, Operations Research.

2. SCHOOL OF PHYSICS

The School offers various High Quality Programmes at M.Sc. and M.Tech levels. It also has Research Programs for its Ph.D. scholars. The school has attained national and international recognition in various areas such as matter physics, high energy physics, non-linear optics, quantum optics, laser physics, solid state physics, material science and electronic science.

3. SCHOOL OF CHEMISTRY

The School of Chemistry is one of the Leading Centres of India for getting education and doing research in chemical sciences. Various fundamental and advanced courses in field of chemistry and related areas are offered by the school. The curriculum of the school is such which covers broadly various branches of chemistry, keeping in view its interdisciplinary nature.

4. SCHOOL OF LIFE SCIENCES

The School of Life Sciences came into existence due to the emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching. The School has five Departments:

The School of Management Studies came into existence in May 1999. It is sanctioned by UGC and it offers two-year Full-Time Residential MBA Programme, and Ph.D. in Management Studies. The school aims in providing its students excellence in Management Education, Research, Training and various other Post Graduate Programmes.

9. SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

The School of Medical Sciences came into existence with an aim to promote and achieve excellence in the medical and health sciences through the teaching and research programmes.

The school has collaborations with School of Life Sciences, School of Management Studies, School of Social Sciences, School of Life Sciences, School of Economics, SN School of Communication and Performing Arts, and with various Centres of the University which are involved in research work Health Sciences.

10. SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY

School of Engineering and Technology was founded in the year 2008-09 with a mission to promote education and research in multi-disciplinary areas of science, engineering and technology. The school is a well known name for its M.Tech and Ph.D. Programmes in Materials Engineering.

11. SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS

The School of Economics was established in the year 1979 and since then it is committed in providing High Quality Education and doing research work in Economics. The school offers programmes in M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D.

12. SCHOOL OF COMPUTER AND INFORMATION SCIENCES

University of Hyderabad also provides opportunity of distance education to its aspirants. CAMPUS

The Campus of the Hyderabad University is located in Gachibowli and is spread in an area of 2300-odd acres. Campus is very rich in flora and fauna and has around 734 flower plants, 10 species of mammals, 15 species of reptiles and approximately 220 species of birds. It has large area which is under forest cover, and rock formations. It has two perennial lakes and three seasonal lakes. The campus also consists of a protected megalithic site.

The campus has 13 hostels for men and 8 hostels for women. There are two shopping complexes located in North campus and South campus each. Campus possesses four canteens. The Tagore International House is specifically for the international students. Four multipurpose auditoriums are there in the campus with DST auditorium being the biggest one.  The University of Hyderabad is considered as one of the Best Universities of India and have highly qualified faculty members and professors who motivate the students always and are available for them anytime.

The departments of the University are open round the clock. Library has well collection of books and research work. Gym, Medical facilities, Sports complex, wi-fi, etc, are some of the facilities available in the campus.

Hyderabad University is one of the best post graduate Universities of India and it also provides reservation to SC/ST/OBS/PWD and Wards/Dependents of Defence Personnel’s and also Kashmiri Migrants.
