Established in 1857, the University of Mumbai is an open university that offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral-level, certificate and diploma programmes. The university features four campuses, namely Thane campus, Kalina campus, Fort campus, and Ratnagiri campus. The central library of the university is located at Sir Rajabai Clock tower. Another library is set in the Kalina campus which is famously known as Jawaharlal Nehru library.
The university began its classes with the departments of arts and medicine. The institution awarded its first degree in 1862. In 1996, the university's name was changed from the University of Bombay to the University of Mumbai.
Currently the University has 56 Departments, 12 specialized Centres, 781 Affiliated Colleges, 2 main Campuses, 2 sub Campuses, 2 Model Colleges, and the ‘School of Engineering and Applied Sciences’ at Kalyan as the University’s own Engineering College. Mumbai University has possibly the wide spread geographical area under its jurisdiction from Thane district to Sindhudurg district, an expansion of over 600 km.
Formerly, the Mumbai University is known as the Bombay University, it is a state university houses two campuses in Mumbai, one in Kalina and another one in suburban Mumbai. It has been accredited with ‘A’ grade by the NAAC. University of Mumbai offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Certificate, Diploma, and Ph.D. programs. Mumbai University admission for B.Tech., M.Tech., and MBBS programs at privately-owned colleges are conducted through JEE Main and NEET. Law faculty of the university conducts MUCLET exam for LLB and LLM Programs.

The University of Mumbai (commonly known as Mumbai University) has more than 700+ affiliated colleges and two main campuses situated in Kalina and Fort. The university also has two sub-campuses located in Thane and Ratnagiri.
MU offers degree, diploma, doctorate and certificate courses in more than 1200 courses in various streams. The university is known for its BA, BTech, BE, MBBS, BMM and BFA Programmes.
- The admission cycle begins typically in the month of May every year.
- Admission to most of the programmes in Mumbai University is merit-based.
- BE/ BTech/ BText and BPharm admission are based on a valid score in MHT CET conducted by DTE.
- For MTech, MText and ME programs, only GATE passed candidates are eligible.
- For LLM course admissions, the varsity conducts All India LLM Entrance Exam.
- The varsity conducts Mumbai University Common Management Entrance Test (MUCMET) for admission in integrated BMS-MBA Course.
- For some MA courses entrance tests are conducted by the respective department of the varsity.

Mumbai University Admission Eligibility Criteria 2020
It is compulsory for the candidates to accomplish the eligibility criteria of admission. The required criteria are as follows:
For F.YB.Sc, F.Y.B.A, F.Y.B.Com, F.Y.B.S.W, F.Y.B.A, F.Y.B.M.M, F.Y.B.M.S., F.Y.B.Voc, F.Y.B.M.S- F.Y.M.B.A, F.Y.B. Library Science Courses (UG Courses)
(i) A willing aspiring students must have passed Higher Secondary School Certificate Examination (HSSC), from a school or institution acknowledged comes under Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.
(ii) Candidates looking admission in integrated B.Sc , BA, and B.Com. Courses must have passed min. 45% marks in HSSC.
For BBA-LLB
Out of 120, 85% seats are occupied by candidates who are domicile of Maharashtra. The prime eligibility criteria for MUCLET are as below:
(i) An aspiring candidate need to passed XII or equivalent examination with minimum 45% marks. Candidates under the category of SC and ST need to score minimum of 40% marks.
(ii) Applicant need to score minimum cut off marks in MUCLET 2019 to be deliberated for Mumbai University Admission.
For M.Sc Courses
Admission in Mumbai University for M.Sc courses Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology and Biochemistry will be done on the basis of Merit List. However, University has two different set of eligibility criteria for Mumbai University Admission. Preference will be given in merit list as per the list given below:
- For Mumbai University Students:
(i) Applicant must have passed in First class without any grace marks and having only 1 major subject.
(ii) In case two or more applicants marks are equal CGPA will be taken into mental analysis.
(iii) Applicant who have passed in First class with grace marks or passed with Second class will only 1 major subject.
(iv) Students having 2 major subjects and one of them being Chemistry in T.Y.B.Sc, then only marks of Chemistry will be considered for the position in merit list.
Only one merit list will be made for every single subject. Mumbai University Admission 2020 will be done on the basis of that merit list. Students who want to see the merit list will be able to download it from the official website. A copy of the merit list will also be displayed on the notice board of University.
- For Other University Students:
Merit list of all the students from University other than Mumbai University will be released for the seats remaining. The applicant will be required to submit the Xerox copy of B.Sc mark sheets for all 3 years.
For Ph.D courses
Candidates who wish to take Mumbai University Admission 2020 or Ph.D programme must appear for Ph.D Entrance Test (PET) 2020. Only those candidates will be admitted who will score minimum cut off marks required.
However, candidates who fulfil any one of the following criteria will be exempted from PET 2019:
(i) Candidates who have qualified GATE/ NET/ SET/ JRF Examination
(ii) Candidates, who are teacher fellowship holder of CSIR/ ICMR/ UGC/ DBT/ ICAR only.
(iii) Candidates have completed M.Phil degree for Mumbai University or other recognized University present in India.
The above mentioned candidate who wishes to apply for Ph.D programme must submit the completed application form directly to the Research Centre within 15 days from the date of release of notification.

MU Application Form for Merit Basis Admission
Candidates have to fill admission forms for admission in Under Graduate courses. They also need to fill Pre- Admission form. It is essential to submit MU Admission Form and Pre-Admission Form.
What is Pre-Admission Form: Applicants who are willing to apply for independent institutes in the state can directly apply at the college. However, candidates looking admission in Under Graduate courses, in affiliated colleges with MU, have to fill pre-admission form online.
The candidates have to carry both the forms, when the admission is being carried out in respective colleges,. The form allows candidates to apply for over one college and course.

The admission in Mumbai University is granted on the basis of:

Mumbai University Merit Based Admission 2020: In the merit based admission, candidates submit admission form and Pre-admission form. After that, the merit list is prepared by each college individually and candidates are called for the document verification round.
Mumbai University Entrance Based Admission 2020: For admission in a few courses, the entrance exam is also conducted. The candidates who qualify the exam gets admission in the colleges of Mumbai University.

Mumbai University IDOL (Mumbai University, Institute Of Distance And Open Learning) is a department of distance education in University of Mumbai. It is the 7th university in the country which began the Distance Education Program in a conventional setup. IDOL Mumbai University offers various courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Admission to all programs provided by Mumbai University IDOL (except MCA) is done on the basis of performance of students in last qualifying exam while for MCA program, applicants need to appear for the university conducted entrance exam.
