Eligibility for MBBS study abroad
An Indian student needs the eligibility certificate from Medical Council of India for MBBS study abroad. You can download the certificate of eligibility from the MCI official website.

Every year UK accepts thousands of international students for medicine course. In order to fulfill the eligibility criteria for admission in UK in MBBS a student is required to obtain:

MCI Guidelines for MBBS study abroad
- It is for all Indian students who are willing to take medical qualification from any recognized medical institution in any other country.
- Students must register themselves with a State Medical Council (SMC) who wants to practice in India after receiving medical education from foreign nation.
- NBE organized the entrance exam FMGE which is must to pass for those who want to continue their practice in India after completing their MBBS study abroad. This is a required as per section 13(4A) of the IMC Act, 1956 amended in 2002.
- Candidates are advised to check the eligibility criteria from the MCI before appear at the FMGE. This is as per Section 13(4B) of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.
- Under section 4 and 5 of MCI on Graduate Medical Education 1997, candidates are issued EC by the MCI subject to fulfillment of criteria. Since the criteria for selection are defined in the Regulation, it is mandatory to follow these criteria.
- As per the instructions given by the Supreme Court of India dated 17.12.2013 in SLP No.36956/2013, apirants taking admission in medical courses in foreign nations after 16.04.2010 are need to qualified from the same institution.
- The computer based Screening Test is conducted by NBE twice in a year in June and December. NBE provides the list of pass% students in terms of country and college wise. To obtain registration certificate, a candidate need to clear FMGE who competed their graduation from any foreign Medical Institutions.
Before taking admission to any college, candidates are recommended to check the medium education in that particular college and also understand about the monthly living expenses / availability of hostel facility etc..
- Indian students are advised to take the admission to Foreign universities/institutions by themselves and not through agents. They should ensure compliance with necessary qualifications prescribed under Indian regulations viz. Section 4 “Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 1997”.
Under Section 5 of “Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 1997” a selection procedure has been prescribed regarding admission of students in medical courses in India.
MCI advised foreign institutions to give preference to Indian students who have scored higher marks in all India competitive examination like All India Pre- Medical Test (AIPMT). (obtaining 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) subjects at qualifying examination is the minimum). The institutions must ensure about the quality of candidates being admitted to their courses. The performance in FMGE matters in the admission of candidate.
- Candidates make sure and satisfy with all the information given to them is correct by the foreign College/ University/ like tuition & other fee, facilities, curriculum of the course, language of teaching, monthly living expenses, availability of hostel facilities, etc. MCI may consider obtaining undertaking from the candidates in this regard. At the time of issuance of EC, a candidate also provides a copy of the Indian MBBS curriculum as per Graduate Medical Regulation so that they can refer the same in the context of their training at overseas medical institutions.
- Medical Institutions abroad must check the official website of MCI before admitting Indian students in terms of:
- MBBS curriculum followed in India.
- To got approval from Government of India, medical colleges of India required statutory requirements in terms of faculty, infrastructure etc.
iii. Clinical competencies at UG level.
- The foreign institutes need to provide English as a medium of teaching to Indian students, preferably in English, and also gives some exposure to clinical material by removing restrictions, if any, Indian medical students are allowed to access to local patients.
- Government of India assesses the various medical institutions abroad in terms of consultation to help and guide Indian students willing to pursue admissions in medical courses there. Provide counsellor access to Indian students abroad to resolve various issues pertaining to their education.
