1. Placements

While many students acknowledge placements as a defining factor, only a handful actually check the placement data of a prospective college. Most college aspirants depend on simple word-of-mouth for getting details regarding placements. This is clearly not an ideal scenario, as something as important as placement data should not be distributed solely dependent on ‘word-of-mouth’

Ideally, students should visit the college or university website to check the placement data. Most colleges upload the complete raw data of their placement performance in the past 3-4 years. In case a college does not provide placement data, perhaps you should look for another college.

2. Student perception of a college/university

While placements are inherently quantitative in nature, perception is a highly deceptive factor. It can’t be quantified, it can’t be tamed and worst of all; it can’t be explained.

When it comes to colleges, student perception plays a huge role in shaping the entire narrative surrounding the college. Even after failing to improve its research output and global outreach over the years, the IITs still maintain an aura around their name. They have managed to do so for one simple reason: perception. By setting extremely difficult question papers in entrance exams, the IITs have created an air of invincibility around their brand.

3. Infrastructure

Anything which contributes to the learning of a student and is provided by the college/university can be deemed as part of college infrastructure. This includes practical application labs, libraries, extra-curricular faculties, faculties, research opportunities, modern teaching techniques, and a sound environment for learning.  

4. Affordability

Private Universities are known for charging higher tuition fee than government colleges. For this reason, any private university with a low fee naturally becomes much more viable for most students. If all colleges seem the same, students will always choose the college which asks for a lower fee. As they say in the movies, ‘It’s not economics, it’s just logic’

FLAME University is a private institution located in Pune. An acronym for ‘Foundation for Liberal and Management Education’, FLAME is a self-proclaimed liberal education university.
