6. The Comparison

Moving away from mainstream courses and colleges, we will focus on a different discipline of study for this article.

Fashion designing courses were considered a mere fad until a few years ago, However, unlike every other fad, fashion designing has maintained its popularity over the course of 5-10 years. In fact, the advent of courses such as fashion designing and other niche-degree programs has played a major role in offering students a viable alternative to the mundane mainstream courses.

Pearl Academy vs NIFT vs Symbiosis Institute of Design

Pearl Academy, NIFT, and SID are three of the Best Design schools in India

Harboring the dream of being an integral part of the $68 billion fashion industry of India, many students are turning to fashion designing colleges as the first step towards that goal. However, the task of choosing a decent fashion designing college represents a tumultuous task in itself.

This article will aim to settle the debate between three popular design schools in India; Pearl Academy, NIFT and Symbiosis Institute of Design.

Career in Fashion: Are you really ready?

Understanding the functionality of a typical fashion house is essential for anyone who wishes to become a fashion designer at some point in time in their lives.

Nothing but pure hard work, grit, and determination works in the fashion industry. Mentioned below are a few questions you need to ask yourself before delving into the chasm of the fashion industry.

A true professional of the fashion industry will tell you how difficult it truly is to move up the ladder in a typical in-house environment. The workload is immense and the returns might not be as rewarding during the initial stage.

Many students end up choosing fashion designing because they equate a hobby with a full-time profession. Before diving head first into the chasm of the fashion world, ask yourselves the following questions. Go for fashion designing only if the answer is yes to each of the following.

  1. Do you have the nerve to succeed?

The security and monotony of a corporate job is pleasure many professionals from different fields get to enjoy. However, such a luxury is not afforded to professionals in the fashion industry whose job profile is anything but stale and monotonous.

To work in an in-house fashion office, a professional will have to adapt to an ever-changing world of couture. For this, qualities such as resourcefulness and doggedness play a key part. This is not the type of field where you’ll be able to shirk off responsibilities. In fact, new recruits in the fashion industry are expected to take initiative and be enterprising.

  1. Do you feel the pain enough?

For some, success is an option and for others, it is a necessity.

If you belong to the latter you have the necessary attitude to become a successful fashion designer.

Success requires a radical change in attitude. To succeed, you will have to leave your comfort zone and be ready to fight every day. Relentlessness and perseverance are two of the most valuable personal traits a fashion industry professional can have.

Does the need to succeed hover on your mind every morning? Does it steal your sleep every night? Only true ambition will drive you over and aboard in the fashion industry.

  1. Do you have the tools to succeed?

You must have heard about hard work being the primary factor for success. It is, but there are some things without which success is simply incomprehensible.

To become a fashion designer, talent is almost as indispensable as hard-work to success, if not more, in the fashion industry. Without having the flair to conjure magnanimous designs, the professional will not be able to succeed not matter how hard he/she works.

Only consider fashion designing as a career if you have a certain flair for the art. There is no point wasting your time otherwise.

The Factors

The factors which will help us compare the given set of design schools are listed below:

  1. Industry integration

Being a job-focused course, it is necessary for colleges to be well-knit with prominent fashion houses to ingratiate practical aspects of the fashion industry into the curriculum. Unlike other courses which can afford to be theoretical to a greater extent, colleges offering fashion designing courses must always seek to evolve with the changing dynamics of the fashion industry.

Unlike most other courses which are entrenched in theoretic studies, fashion designing is a much more job-oriented course which requires constant contact with the industry. Any college with does not offer ample industry interaction and ingratiation is not good enough for a course in fashion designing. The way to analyze the level of industry interaction is to verify the academic structure of the fashion designing course offered at the university

  1. Affordability

A degree is fashion designing isn’t similar in any way to a B.Tech or MBA in terms of immediate monetary returns. While engineers and business executives start getting heavily compensated from the beginning of their career, fashion designing graduates have to earn their spurs in their fields before commanding a high pay package. Thus, spending a colossal amount of money in hopes of immediate remuneration after graduation isn’t the ideal way to approach design fashion designing studies.

Affordability becomes a key factor because unlike mainstream courses such as B.Tech and MBA, design courses do not promise instant returns. Even if a student pays a high fee for a B.Tech or MBA course, he/she is likely to recover the amount within two or three years of finishing the degree if the college they studied from was a top-tier institution.

However, this is not the case for design schools. Most design graduates do not land a high pay packet straight after graduation as they are considered too inexperienced to warrant a high CTC. Thus, affordability plays a key role in making or breaking the choice of college.

  1. College perception

Would you join a design college which rumored for producing inept and unemployable professionals for the fashion industry?

Probably not.

Notice that the question says ‘rumoured ‘. It is not a fact that the design college produces bad graduates. It is just a rumor. However, students see these matters in ‘black’ and ‘white’. They simply do not take the risk of going to a college which has a reputation for ineptitude.

This the true power of perception. A college should be perceived well amongst students, faculties and more importantly; industry professionals to be considered an institution of good perception.

  1. Student quality

Since fashion designing is a field full of creative temper and flair, students need a certain level of stimulation to take the next step. Would Messi be as good as he is now if he didn’t have Ronaldo breathing down his neck or vice versa?

To get the best creative impulse out of students in a design college, the college has the responsibility to offer admissions to the best possible sample size of students. The reason why the IITs are so popular is not simply down to great faculties or infrastructure. The presence of some of the most gifted young scientific minds is a major reason behind the popularity of the IITs.
