UPTU is one of India’s biggest technical universities
The tales of UPTU are known amongst Most Engineering Aspirants. While no one expects every institution to be as professional and adequate as the IITs, engineering candidates expect a certain level of organization in technical institutions after two years of incessant preparation.
Rupesh, an engineering graduate from a college in UPTU has seen better days. Coming from a middleclass family, Rupesh grew up in Lucknow and always presumed engineering as the only profession he could pursue.
‘My family is full of engineers. When I was growing up, the thought of pursuing commerce or arts didn’t even flicker my mind. It was always engineering or bust’
Back in 2013, Rupesh took admission in a college in UPTU. ‘I wasn’t a brilliant student. Admission in IIT was never possible. When I got a decent rank in UPTU, I took the nearest college in Lucknow. Everyone was taking up CSE so I went ahead and choose the same’
When asked what the college said during the time of admission, a wry smile enveloping regret crossed Rupesh’s face. ‘They told me placement was guaranteed. I sometimes laugh at my own naivety at times. They duped me. They duped us all’
The college Rupesh took admission in turned out to be farcical in terms of teaching and placements. It was later learned that the college didn’t have AICTE approval. We asked Rupesh why he didn’t check this with the college authorities.
The college was under UPTU! If a college is affiliated with one of India’s biggest engineering universities, you have ample reasons to trust the college. If it wasn’t affiliated with UPTU, why was allowed to be functional in the first place? It simply blows my mind!’
Rupesh is currently unemployed as his degree is worthless without AICTE approval. The question he raises does have significant merit though. How do colleges with no approval get affiliation with UPTU? It makes no sense at all, until it does.
A common theme one generally associates with UPTU is pure apathy and mismanagement. In 2014, a news report caught UPTU officials selling 20,000 answer sheets to garbage collectors. The even more chilling reality was that all those answer sheets were unchecked. In other words, UPTU officials were selling the future of students for some side money.
This isn’t a singular incident by any means. The constant name changing of the university is also ridiculed by students and alumni alike. In 2010, UPTU was split sideways into Gautam Buddha Technical University (GBTU) and Mahamaya Technical University (MTU). In 2013, the name again reverted to the old UPTU nomenclature until 2015 when it became A.P.J Abdul Kalam Technical University.
This kind of tomfoolery affects the status of the university, which in turn is reflected on the students. While no one is denying the presence of some good colleges under UPTU, there is no escaping from the fact that it remains one of India worst run universities. While using the name of India’s greatest scientist and former president and be as inept as UPTU is, there is simply no room for appreciation or dialogue.
Top 10 colleges in UPTU
Out of 750 colleges spread across the plains of Uttar Pradesh, only a few are worth pursuing engineering in. The UPTU colleges other than the ten mentioned below are not worth investing time and money in. These UPTU colleges rankwise are listed below.
- Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI), Kanpur
One of UP’s and North India’s best engineering colleges, HBTI is one of the country’s oldest scientific institutions. Established during the British rule, it has been named after the then Governor of the United Provinces, Sir Spencer Harcourt Butler.
Harcourt Butler has for long been the shining light of UPTU. Many students only appear for UPTU entrance exam in the hope of getting admission in HBTI. In 2016, HBTI was recognized as a university by the Government of UP through the HBTU Act, 2016.
One of the oldest colleges in UPTU, HBTI gained university status in 2016 to become HBTU
HBTI: Courses & Fee structure
HBTI offers undergraduate, post-graduate and doctoral programmes in engineering, business administration and computer applications. These courses are accredited and approved by all necessary government bodies such as NAAC and AICTE.
HBTI fees for various courses are tabulated below.

HBTI Placements
HBTU placements are generally very promising considering it is one of few government colleges with a reputable name in the country besides IITs and NITs. Top companies from India and around the world recruit graduates from HBTI during on-campus placements every year.
Due to its usual high cutoff and less number of seats, HBTI is generally considered to have candidates with strong engineering aptitude by the industry. Being a top government institution, placements are even across fields and not skewed towards IT. Placements for core branches such as mechanical, civil and electrical is usually done in core companies, which draws a stark contrast to many top private colleges in India. Most private colleges only manage IT placements for mechanical and civil students, a situation which is not ideal.
Some of the HBTI placement statistics companies have been listed below.

IERT Placements
Placement opportunities are limited at IERT due to lack of campus outreach and industry integration. While the quality of teaching is up to the mark, the lack of vigor in the college authorities to bring companies to the campus results in a less selection rate of students.
Many alumni praise the college’s faculty and staff, but find the lackadaisical attitude of the college administration towards campus placements distressing. If IERT can improve its industry outreach efforts, it will surely be counted amongst the top government colleges in UP and India.
