Short answer: difference is that EE offices are facing the north wall of the building and mech offices are facing the south wall. Projects are highly multidisciplinary, you will have all engineering types inside a company working together. The person who commented before me is mixing mechanics/repairman with mechanical engineering. The whole point of mechanical engineering is "machine design", aka automation. It was the spark for the Industrial revolution. Modern mechanical engineering is transforming with the need of industry. University curriculums include: robotics, bio-systems, mechatronics, computational modelling and automation, programming, design and many more. Mechanical domain is very inclined towards system architecture and design, so you have to think how many different parts function together. I also read the following statement: "Many of the things mechanical engineers do can be easily modeled / simulated with software". Who do you thinks makes these models? Airbus A380 was designed purely in virtual environment. We don't really have much opportunity to fly spacecraft before launch either. Hence we take advantage of very sophisticated software programs developed by many engineers within the field.
